Device-specific wallpapers? Count me in

Anyone itching to get their hands on the rumoured Google Pixelbook Go may find their device comes with a set of exclusive wallpapers.

Code spotted by Dinsan over at ChromeStory suggests that the search giant is planning to furnish its upcoming “Made by Google” Chromebook(s) with bespoke background images, just like it does on the Pixel branded phones.

The code commit is unambiguously titled: [CrOS Wallpapers] Add new filtering label for “Made by Google” devices” and explains:

“In order to make a specific collection of wallpaper photos (“Anna’s Garden”) only available on “Made by Google” chromebooks, a new filtering label must be added to whitelist that collection to “Made by Google” chromebooks.”

Sadly the related bug report is private.

What is somewhat interesting is that the code comment is not device specific. This may suggest that the new ‘exclusive wallpapers’ — codenamed ‘Anna’s garden’ — will also be available on the Chromebook Pixel 2, Pixelbook and Pixel Slate (for those lucky/rich enough to own them).

And for everyone else?

Well, as soon as these bespoke backgrounds are revealed it’ll take someone all of 2 seconds to upload ’em to a site like Imgur where everyone, Chromebook users or not, can download and enjoy them — sorry, Goog!

You can expect to hear more details on the (rumoured) Pixelbook Go as we approach Google’s upcoming hardware event, which is scheduled for October 15, 2019.

But if you happen to spot the Go’s designer drapes sooner, do let me know!
